Embracing the New Age of Materiality

Harnessing the Pace of Change in ESG

In greater numbers and at greater speed, environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues are becoming
financially material. Thirty years ago, when climate change was established as a scientific fact, most investors did not consider it as a substantial investment risk.

Today, in light of mounting evidence, activism and regulation, investors are including climate considerations in their investment decision-making. For example, a group of investors managing $118 trillion in assets now expects companies to provide disclosures in accordance with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
While getting to this point took decades, the pace of change has accelerated. This is equally true for social issues, which almost 50% of investors believe will have a significant
impact on share prices within the next 24 months.
